The conveyance channel discharges into the Rio Grande below the existing

New Ditch diversion dam. A gated check structure prevents high flows in the

Rio Grande from backing up into the channel.

D. Observation Wells

A network of 82 observation wells provides water level or pressure data for

both the confined and unconfined aquifers. These data will be used to operate

the project within the limits prescribed by the authorizing legislation.

Some of the observation wells are "dual-completion" wells, that is, one

4-inCll diameter well in the confined or artesian aquifer and another in the

unconfined aquifer. The remaining observation wells individually monitor the

confined or unconfined aquifers. Enclosures of corrugated metal pipe provide

well head protection and space for the solar-powered monitoring and com-
munications equipment. Dual completion wells are housed in a common well head
enclosure.

The remaining observation wells individually monitor the confined or uncon-
fined aquifers. Construction of tne monitoring system at these sites includes
the installation of enclosures for the protection of the monitoring and com-

munications equipment.

E.
