-000'716

.

.

representatives of these agencies in an attempt to resolve this matter. The proposed re-
port is scheduled to be completed in October 1968.

The detailed land classification and drainage studies for the Basalt Project have
essentially been completed. Field review of the lands and drainage by the Regional Of-
fice was completed in June 1968. Results of the geological investigation for the enlarge-
ment of the existing Missouri Heights Reservoir were sent to the Chief Engineer's office
for their review and evaluation. Other studies for the project are proceeding satisfactorily,
and the proposed feasibility report is scheduled for completion at the end of FY 1971.

Feasibility investigations will be initiated on the Lower Yampa Project (formerly
identified as the :.Juniper and Great Northern Projects) os soon as appropriated funds are
made available, possibly within the next 30 days.

We are continuing the collection and tabulation of data for the Upper Colorado
River Comprehensive Resource Study 0 and narrative material for the pending Basin report
is underway,

We are proceeding with the collection and evaluation of data and preparation of an
interim reconnaissance report of the Upper Colorado River Salinity Control Study. The
study is being made in cooperation with the Federal Water Pollution Control Administra-
tion and may lead to future feasibility investigations for salinity control in the Upper
Colorado River Basin.

Late in June a contract was awarded to the Willard Pease Drilling Company of Grand
Junction, Colorado, on a bid price of $52,886 to plug two old wells in the White River
and Piceance Creek areas that now discharge salt impregnated water into Colorado River
tributaries. Plugging of the wells was completed early in August. This is the first step in
an extensive program to improve water quality throughout the Colorado River Basin. The
Federal Water Pollution Control Administration and the Bureau of Reclamation are con-
ducting a search for other sources of high saline pollution in the Colorado River Basin.
Appropriate additional measureS will be instituted to reduce pollution from all sources,

ADVANCE PLANNING

As previously reported, the Fruitland Mesa Project definite plan report has been com-
pleted and approved by the Commissioner. Preconstruction investigations have been in
progress since issuance of the definite plan report. Specification surveys for the Gould
Canal structures and structure designs have been initiated. Studies are now underway to
determine the final location for the proposed Fruitland Mesa Canal diversion dam. The
Commissioner's office has approved a preliminary draft of the project repayment contract.
A copy of the proposed contract has been given to the Directors of the Fruitland Mesa Con-
servancy District prior to undertaking contract negotiations. Plans for settlement of new
farm units in the project area are also going forward.

5
