4)

past five years, maintains its present growth. The cost of trans-

porting farm produce from outside the basin is sufficiently high that

local prices for many products are maintained at Denver levels. This

is not generally true of livestock, which sells locally at Denver

prices less the regular freight rate. Improvement in highway trans-

portation has fostered extension of the local market to towns through-

out the southwest from Santa Fe to Los Angeles. Many such towns have

little or no local sustaining agriculture and depend on outside

sources for poultry, eggs, milk products, fruits, and vegetables.

With further irrigation development in the territory sur-

rounding Durango, many additional marketing facilities Will be neces-

sary. One of the first needs is a meat packing plant so that with

the increased production of feed, the farmer can feed out his own

r:~,~
;"',,~
~~..,.

livestock instead of shipping them out to be finished. The area is

particularly well adapted to the growing of sugar beets but beets

cannot be grown profitably unless a sugar factory is built in the

region. Dairying now at the limit of supporting feed will undoubt-

edly increase ~~th irrigation development and expanded creamery

facilities will be required. Production of fruits and vegetables

will possibly require a local cannery or at least an enlargement of

present facilities at Farmington. Enticing prospects are open for the

production of high grade healthy seeds and wholesale seed houses

would likely be developedT Lo9ally the project w~ll require consid-

erable improvement in werehouse facilities.

25
