A part of the <br /> <br />> <br /> <br />route is along the paved highway, U. S. 160. A graveled road runs <br /> <br />southeast through the project to Ignacio. Other connecting roads <br /> <br />within the project are unimproved. Transportation facilities are <br /> <br />available to all parts of the country from Durango. <br /> <br />The report made in 1925 by c. C. Fisher on the Pine River, <br /> <br />Animas, and other San Juan Basin ~ojects stated that none of the <br /> <br />projects examined were then economically feasible--lI Owing to exist- <br /> <br />ing unfavorable transportation and marketing conditi ons and to <br /> <br />general depression in agri cuI ture thrcughout the country." The <br /> <br />project now rests on firmer grounds but needs more improved facili- <br /> <br />"'~",~" <br />t#.~ <br />~~1 <br /> <br />ties. <br /> <br />Railroads. From Durango narrow gage lines of the Denver <br /> <br />& Rio Grande Western Railroad run east to Alamosa, south to Farming- <br /> <br />ton, and north up Anims River to the mining tOl'm of Silverton. The <br /> <br />narrow gage Rio Grande Southern Railroad connects Durango by way of <br /> <br />Telluride and Ridgway with the Denver and Rio Grande Western Rail- <br /> <br />road at Montrose. The line to Alamosa passes through the ~oject <br /> <br />wi th loading stations at Falfa and Oxford. At Alamosa and Montrose <br /> <br />connections are made with standard gage lines. <br /> <br />Present freight rates from Durango to the principal market <br /> <br />centers follow: <br /> <br />26 <br />
