the initial phase of the planning effort, the lower South

Platte study area corresponds to the region cncompassed by

water District No. 64.

The objective of "water Resources Investigation in the South

Platte River Valley" is to detail existing characteristics of

the agricultural water supply and application system, inventory

present water management practices, and propose/evaluate physical

and administrative alternatives that could be implemented to

optimize availability of water during temporary or extended

drbught. An extensive mapping effort is associated with this

study.

Timely completion of the investigation was considered essential

in order to provide an adequate advance period during winter/

spring, 1978, within which any recommended construction or

adfuinistrative programs could be implemented. To facilitate plan

development in time to accommodate any impending drought in

the summer of 1978, the Office of the state Engineer elected to

analyze the South Platte River Valley in terms of three basic

reaches:

Reach No. 1 - State Line to the Balzac Gaging Station;

Reach No. 2 - Balzac Gaging station to the Kersey

Gaging Station;

Reach No. 3 - Kersey Gaging station to Chatfield

Reservoir (including the Beebe Draw).
