A fence was constructed around District property at the
north portal of Hollywood tunnel. Repairs were made to the
valve control shaft in the head works at Lake Matbews. All mate-
rials and equipment remaining in salvage stocks at Banning were
moved to the softening plant yard at La Verne. Considerable
painting was done on structures at Palos Verdes reservoir and
Lake Mathews. Aluminum paint was applied to metal surfaces
that were camouflaged during the war period for purposes of
safety, The reservoir area at Lake Mathews below elevation 1347'
feet was cleared of weeds and other vegetation prior to increasing
the amount of water in storage by main aqueduct pumping, The
side slopes of Plllos Verdes reservoir were cleaned from the top
down to withill 14 feet of the bottom, Three 4-inch relief valves
were installed at the Beverly Hills relief valve structure to replace
the existiug valves. A 36.inch meter was removed from the Orange
County reservoir by-pass line and the propeller from this meter
was used to replace the damaged propeller in the 36 x lO-inch
compound reservoir outlet meter. A break in the Orange County
feeder line opposite the Bristol Street pumping station in Santa
Ana was repaired. This break was caused by failure of a bolt in
a :lO-iuch victaulic coupling allowing a flow of 15 cubic feet per
second to be released. There was no damage to property, The
line was returned to service after a total outage of 29 hours. Two
small leaks in the concrete pipe line south of the Corona del Mar
reservoir were repaired by pouring concrete collars around the pipe,
In addition to the work done by the maintenance crew in con-
nection with reservoirs, pipe lines, and appurtenant structures,
- considerable -work -was .done -at-the - softening and. filtration-plant
at La Verne. Accumulated sludge was removed from clarifier
and floeeulator bllsins, During the time these basins were out of
serviee, the coal-tar enamel coating on the steel overflow weirs
was cleaned and painted with a copper-base anti-fouling paint to
inhibit the growth of algae, and a new overflow pipe was installed
in the lower sludge basin, One filter bed was cleaned of algae,
sandblasted. and painted with similar anti-fouling paint as an ex-
periment in preventing the growth of algae on the concrete sur.
faces. Propellers on both 36-inch meters, installed in the two
chambers of the influent channel, were metalized for protection
against corrosion, The temporary restricting orifices were re-
moved from the influent channel. These orifices were originally

I

~
