<br />An average crew of 34 men exclusive of the softening plant
<br />forces, working under the direction of the District's chief opera-
<br />tion and maintenance engineer, carried on all operation, mainte-
<br />nance, and minor construction activities on the distribution system.
<br />No serious difficulties were encountered in operating and main-
<br />taining the pipe lines and reservoirs during this fifth year of oper-
<br />ation. Division foremen are located at Lake Mathews, Morris
<br />reservoir, Orange County reservoir, Palos Verdes reservoir, and
<br />on the Santa Monica feeder. These foremen, with the assistance
<br />of maintenance men and helpers, maintain the reservoirs, the
<br />upper feeder, the branch feeders, and the laterals, Normal main.
<br />tenance work includes systematic patrol, minor repairs, collection
<br />of water samples, and changing of meter charts at regular inter-
<br />\'als, Special and major maintenance and repair work is done by
<br />men under the mechanical foreman with headquarters at the soft-
<br />ening and filtration plant at La Verne.
<br />Several minor projects were handled by the maintenance crews
<br />in addition to their regular maintenance work. A new 16-inch
<br />diameter regulating valve was installed in the structure at the north
<br />portal of Hollywood tunnel. A new propeller wheel was installed
<br />in the inflow-outflow meter at Pulos Verdes reservoir. A badly
<br />cavitated 48 x 36-inch flood release needle valve at Morris Dam
<br />was replaced with a 30 x 24-inch needle valve, and two additional
<br />valves were overhauled. Vents were installed in various struc-
