There ,vas no work other than routine inspection and mainte-
nance on any of the fifteen main pumps or motors, Reconstruction
of certain parts of the operating mechanism on two more of the
main pump discharge valves at Intake, Gene, and Iron Mountain
plants was completed, Two of the remaining four valves were
dismantled and similar work is in progress on them, The bush.
ings in the 6900.volt main motill' circuit breakers at all plants were
found to have deteriorated due to excessive summer heat, and new
porcelain bushings were ordered. to replace them.
Following sevel'e electrical storm.s in August 1945, the lightning
arresters at Gene and Hayfield plants were found to,be seriously
damaged, The failure apparently was the result of electrical dis-
turbances caused by the opening of the 230-kv circuit breakers at
Boulder, - ~\V !larfs' \Vere i>lihiiiled alld' afb-ofh !llants- tlie arreste,;s
were moved from the line side of the breakers to new locations
between the breakers and the transformers,
Operation of the messhall at Iron Mountain camp was discon-
tinued August 10, 1945, Gene messhall and dormitory were oper-
ated dUl'ing the entire yedr.
The average force for the entire pumping system, including
pumping plants, transmi~sion lines, and telephone system, aver-
aged about 75 dnring the year, All bnt one of the seven men from
the pumping system who entered the armed forces had returned
to District employment by the end of the fiscal year, Employment
turnover was somewhat less than during the year 1944-45, There
