I

..

,

An extensive transmission system (called the Transmission Division)
consisting of substations and transmission lines is included in the project.
The system carries project power to key load points in the marketing area.
It is integrated with pre~erence power users' and private utilities'
transmission lines to form the Colorado River Storage Project Inter-
connected Transmission System.

The storage units are Glen Canyon on the Colorado River in Arizona near the

Utah border, Flaming Gorge on the Green River in Utah near the Wyoming

border, Navajo on the San Juan River in New Mexico near the Colorado border,

and Curecanti on the Gunnison River in west-central Colorado. After com-

pletion of the Crystal feature of the Curecanti unit six reservoirs formed

by the four units will have a total storage capacity of nearly 34 million

acre feet. The electric power generating plants installed at five of the

reservoirs will have an installed capacity of 1266 megawatts.

Glen Canyon Unit with its dam located 17 miles upstream from Lee Ferry,
is the key feature of the Colorado River Storage Project. The 710 foot
high dam forms a reservoir which provides more storage capacity than the
other five reservoirs of the project combined. The concrete arch dam has
a crest length of 1,560 feet.

,Total capacity of Glen Canyon Reservoir (Lake Powell) is 27 million acre-
feet, and the active capacity is 20,876,000 acre-feet. At normal water
surface elevation the reservoir has a length of 186 miles and a surface
area of 161,400 acres. The powerplant at the toe of the dam houses eight
l18,750-ki10watt generators.

Flaming Gorge Unit is on the Green River in northeastern Utah, about 32 miles

downstream from the Utah-Wyoming border. The concrete thin-arch dam has a

maximim height of 502 feet and a crest length of 1,285 feet. The powerplant

is at the downstream toe of the dam and houses three 36,OOO-kilowatt

generators. Flaming Gorge Reservoir has a total capacity of 3,789,000 acre

feet and an active capacity of 3,516,000 acre-feet. At normal water surface

2
