.

elevation the reservoir has a surface area of 42,000 acres.

Navajo Unit is on the San Juan River in northwestern New Mexico. The dam

is about 34 miles east of Farmington. It is a rolled earthfill embankment

with a structural height of 402 feet and a crest length of 3,648 feet. At

normal water surface elevation the reservoir has a capacity of 1~708,000

acre feet, and a surface area of 15,600 acres. There is no powerplant, but

a 23,000 kilowatt plant is planned for construction primarily to provide

pumping power for the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project.

The Curecanti Unit develops the water-storage and hydroelectric power

generating potentialities along a 40-mile section of the Gunnison River

in Colorado. The unit consists of three dams and powerplants: Blue Mesa,

Morrow Point, and Crystal. BI,e Mesa and Morrow Point are constructed.

Crystal in under construction.

Blue Mesa Dam is on the Gunnison River about 30 miles west of Gunnison,

Colorado and 1.5 miles west of Sapinero, Colorado. The zoned earthfill

embankment has a streambed height of 340 feet, a crest length of 770 feet.

Blue Mesa Reservoir has a total capacity of 941,000 acre-feet, and an

active capacity of 749,000 acre-feet. At maximum elevation the reservoir

water surface area is 9,200 acres. The Blue Mesa Powerplant consists of

two 30,000-kilowatt generators.

Morrow Point Dam, 12 miles downstream and west from Blue Mesa Dam is the

Bureau's first thin-arch, double-curvature dam. It is 465 feet high, 52 feet

thick at the base, and 12 feet thick at the crest. The dam has a crest

length of 720 feet. Reservoir capacity behind Morrow Point Dam is 117,000

acre-feet at maximum water surface. The active capacity is 42,000 acre-feet.

Surface area for Morrow Point Reservoir is 800 acres at normal water sur-

face elevation. The powerplant is embedded in the mountainside and houses

two 60,000 kilowatt generators.

Crystal Dam, seven miles downstream and west from Morrow Point Dam, is
under construction. It will be a double-curvature thin-arch type concrete
structure 620 feet long at the crest and 340 feet high. At normal water

3
