comprehensive salinity control program for all public lands
N administered by the BLM, continuation of land use and
.::..
~ activity planning, project implementation, and basic data
collection in Sinbad Valley.
Public Law 98-569 directed the Secretary of the Interior
to develop a comprehensive program for minimizing salt
contributions from lands administered by the Bureau of Land

Management.

In response, a task force consisting of

representatives from each of the BLM offices in the seven

Basin States and the Denver Service Center developed an

outline and draft policy for the July 1987 report.

Salinity control has been identified as a resource issue

in several resource management plans within the Colorado
River Basin. Through the planning system three activity
plans were developed in 1985 in which salinity control has
been identified as one of the objectives.

BLM project implementation continued in 1985. Of

particular interest were the completion of Elephant Skin Wash

in Colorado and construction of three structures in Upper

Sagers Wash, Utah.

Elephant Skin Wash is a watershed

improvement project consisting of spreader dikes to reduce

sediment and salt load to the Uncompaghre River. Other

project work occurred in the Craig and Grand Junction
Districts, Colorado. project maintenance work was also
conducted on saline soils in the Virgin River drainage of

Arizona.

-14-
