Program FY49
Funds available, $712,503.

Accomplishments FY49

Costs to June 30, $239,543.

Construction was scheduled
to start on Cannonball Dam
and Government camp.

Final design data for both camp and
dam ware completed, However, no
construction was started.

It has been recommended that land
resources and economics of the unit
be reanalyzed before any major con-
struction activity.

MISSOURI-SOURIS UNIT

Description, The Missouri-Souris Unit is served by diverting water
from the Missouri River below Fort Peck Dam, and by a system of control
reservoirs, canals, and pump lifts, utilizing that water for irrigation
of a large area in eastern Montana and the northern portion of North
Dakota.

In Montana, this unit includes a total of 166,600 acres in ten
separate areas. The main, or Missouri, canal with a capacity of
7,500 cfs will also be used as a supply canal for l1edicine Lake Reser-
voir. This reservoir will be formed by the construction of a dam on
Big Muddy Creek. It will be used as a regulating reservoir for the
Missouri-Souris Unit in North Dakota, and the storage provided will take
up the heavy demand during the irrigation season and allow the use of a
smaller main canal.

In North Dakota, this unit includes a total irrigable area of
1,108,500 acres. These lands will be furnished water by the Grenora
Pumping Plant with a lift of 90 to 103 feet from lIedicine Lake Reser-
voir to the Souris Canal.

The Souris Canal, with an initial capacity of 12,000 second-feet,
will carry water to the Crosby-Mohall area.

Return flows from the Crosby-Mohall area are to be diverted into
the Sheyenne River. The Sheyenne Dam will form a reservoir from which
water is to be diverted to restore Devils Lake for recreational use,
and supply water for municipal use in the Red River Valley. Water is
also to be diverted from the right abutment of the Sheyenne Dam into
the James River Valley to serve the Jamestown and Oakes areas. These
flows will be regulated by the Jamestown Reservoir formed by a dam on
the James River approx:!l1lately two miles above Jamestown, North Dakota.

46
