OOOl!':3 MIRAGE FLATS PROJECT Description: Mirage Flats is located in northwestern Nebraska in the Niobrara River Basin. Irrigation water will be supplied for 12,000 acres of land lyine south of Hay Springs, Nebraska. Construction of this project began under the WCU program in January 1941. The princi- pal feature is Box Butte Dam located on the Niobrara River north of Alliance. The dam is an earthfill structure 87 feet high, with a crest length of 5,508 feet. Capacity is 31,300 acre-feet. Program FY49 Funds available, $229,075. Accomplishments FY49 Costs to June 30, $220,165. Minor construction was to be completed on Box Butte Dam and distribution system. A contract was completed for exten- sion of the main canal and miscel- laneous work on Box Butte Dam was essentially completed. ., BUFORD-TRENTON PROJECT Description: This project is located in Williams County in north- western North Dakota and was constructed for irrigation of approximately 14,000 acres of bottom lands along the Hissouri River by pumping. Program FY49 Accomplishments FY49 Costs to June 30, $33,419. Funds available, $59,305, Construction was scheduled to start on the canal and lateral system in the east bottoms. No construction has been started although specifications are sub- stantially completed. CANNONBALL.Jlli!! Description: The Cannonball Unit consists of facilities for ir- rigation of 17,750 acres of land. The new Cannonball Reservoir site lies approximately 30 miles above the junction of the Cedar River and the Cannonball River in southwestern North Dakota. The reservoir will have a capacity of 193,000 acre-feet, providing 40,000 acre-feet of storage for the irrigation of approximately 9,710 acres; 5,000 acre- feet of silt storage; and 148,000 acre-feet of flood control storage. The dam will be an earthfill structure 113 feet high and approximately 3,000 feet long, with about 1,500 feet being relatively low embanlanent. 45
