<br />OOOl!':3 <br /> <br />MIRAGE FLATS PROJECT <br /> <br />Description: Mirage Flats is located in northwestern Nebraska in <br />the Niobrara River Basin. Irrigation water will be supplied for 12,000 <br />acres of land lyine south of Hay Springs, Nebraska. Construction of <br />this project began under the WCU program in January 1941. The princi- <br />pal feature is Box Butte Dam located on the Niobrara River north of <br />Alliance. The dam is an earthfill structure 87 feet high, with a crest <br />length of 5,508 feet. Capacity is 31,300 acre-feet. <br /> <br />Program FY49 <br />Funds available, $229,075. <br /> <br />Accomplishments FY49 <br />Costs to June 30, $220,165. <br /> <br />Minor construction was to be <br />completed on Box Butte Dam and <br />distribution system. <br /> <br />A contract was completed for exten- <br />sion of the main canal and miscel- <br />laneous work on Box Butte Dam was <br />essentially completed. <br /> <br />., <br /> <br />BUFORD-TRENTON PROJECT <br /> <br />Description: This project is located in Williams County in north- <br />western North Dakota and was constructed for irrigation of approximately <br />14,000 acres of bottom lands along the Hissouri River by pumping. <br /> <br />Program FY49 <br /> <br />Accomplishments FY49 <br />Costs to June 30, $33,419. <br /> <br />Funds available, $59,305, <br /> <br />Construction was scheduled <br />to start on the canal and <br />lateral system in the east <br />bottoms. <br /> <br />No construction has been started <br />although specifications are sub- <br />stantially completed. <br /> <br />CANNONBALL.Jlli!! <br /> <br />Description: The Cannonball Unit consists of facilities for ir- <br />rigation of 17,750 acres of land. The new Cannonball Reservoir site <br />lies approximately 30 miles above the junction of the Cedar River and <br />the Cannonball River in southwestern North Dakota. The reservoir will <br />have a capacity of 193,000 acre-feet, providing 40,000 acre-feet of <br />storage for the irrigation of approximately 9,710 acres; 5,000 acre- <br />feet of silt storage; and 148,000 acre-feet of flood control storage. <br />The dam will be an earthfill structure 113 feet high and approximately <br />3,000 feet long, with about 1,500 feet being relatively low embanlanent. <br /> <br />45 <br />
