.

000166

.

.t

includes the existing Bonny Dam and Reservoir and a pumping plant
and irrigation facilities to irrigate 7,000 acres of land north
and east of the dam.

The Narrows unit is located in northeastern Colorado on the
South Platte River to provide supplemental irrigation, flood
control, recreation enhancement, fish and wildlife conservation
and developments, and potential future municipal and industrial
water supplies. The Narrows Dam, to be constructed about 7 miles
west of Fort Morgan, will be the principal feature. The unit
was authorized in August 1970.

Advance planning activities were initiated on the Narrows
Unit in F. Y. 1972 and the definite plan report is scheduled for
completion in F. Y. 1973. Other activities scheduled for and
under way in the current fiscal year include updating of the
economic and financial analysis, rights-of-way appraisals, and
collection of data preparatory to negotiations with the Union
Pacific Railroad for relocation of its line around the reservoir
site. In addition, Congress appropriated funds in the amount of
$250,000 to initiate a land acquisition program. Land purchases
are being delayed until funding for future years, hasbeon deter-
mined.

The Front Range Unit is a combination of two previously
investigated units--the St. Vrain and Cache la poudre. The study
area extends from Denver north to the Wyoming state line and
includes the watersheds of the Cache la poudre and Big Thompson
Rivers and st. Vrain Creek.

The feasibility investigations of the Front Range that have
been completed to date indicate that full utilization of Eastern
Slope water resources is necessary. The increase in population
has placed increased demands on water for l'i&I us.e arid will con-
tinue to exert greater demands in the future. A management plan
for the control of all available water supplies is evolving. This
plan will consider combined open ditch and/or pipe distribution
systems, conservation storage, pOllution control, recreation and
fish and wildlife facilities. Feasibility investigations were
initiated in F. Y. 1970 and completion of the report is scheduled
in F. Y. 1975.

Chatfield Dam is scheduled for final closure in August 1973.
The Corps is presently involved in the .final review and approval
Qf the Master Plan (Recreation Plan) for Chatfield Lake. The
Board is involved in the difficult procurement of the necessary

12
