.

000165

.

Fryinqpan-Arkansas Proiect

This Bureau of Reclamation project involves transmountain
diversion of water from the Fryingpan River, a tributary of the
Colorado River, through the Continental Divide to the Arkansas
River Basin. Supplemental water will be provided for lands in the
Arkansas River Valley; municipal and industrial water will be
furnished to several Eastern Slope cities; and substantial benefits
will accrue to recreation, fish, wildlife, and flood control.
Power will be produced on the Eastern Slope.

Completed structures include Ruedi Dam and Reservoir,
Charles H. Boustead Tunnel, Sugar Loaf Dam and Turquoise Lake
Enlargement, and various railroad and highway relocations.

Features under construction include Pueblo Dam, Nast
Tunnel of the North Side Collection System, Hunter Tunnel of the
South Side Collection System, and Mt. Elbert Pumped-Storage Power
Plant. The project was about 40 percen~ complete on March 31 of
this year.

South Platte River Basin

The Upper South Platte Unit (Two Forks) feasibility investi-
gations have been under way since 1965. The unit would be located
on the South Platte River about 24 miles southwest of Denver. Major
facilities would consist of Two Forks Dam and Reservoir and Power
Plant and Turkshead Dam. The unit would conserve and regulate M&I
water supplies, develop peaking power, provide flood control, and
furnish significant recreational benefits.

" '

A special report on the unit was completed in September 1972.
This report summarized the status of the studies and provided
information on the physical and functional aspects of the unit for
use by an independent consulting firm with which the Bureau of
Reclamation contracted to provide an assessment of the environmental
impact of the potential project. The final report by the consulting
firm was completed in April 1973, and the results of the study will
be incorporated in the Regional Director's feasibility report on
the Upper South Platte Unit.

The Armel unit is located in the southeastern corner of Yuma
county in eastern Colorado. The feasibility studies.were initiated
in F. Y. 1970 and are nearing completion. TIle unit as proposed

11
