WATER SUPPLY FOR THE 1942 SEASON

1. On Maroh 1. 1942 irrigation water supply in storage reser-
voirs of the South Platte River basin was 14 peroent in exoess of aver-
age Maroh 1 storage for the period 1926-1938. inolusive. The 350.603
aore feet in reservoirs on March 1. 1942 is 49 peroent greater than the
amount in storage on Maroh 1. 1941 and 94 percent in exoess of storage
on Maroh 1, 1940.

2. Water content of snew aooumulated in the mountain areas
of the South Platte Basin is 8.5 peroent greater, as of Maroh I, 1942.
than the 1935-1941 average water 0 ontent for the same date. and 52 per-
oent in excess of the water content on Maroh 1. 1941.

3. General winter preoipitation, particularly that reoeived
in February, on the irrigated areas of Northern Colorado is responsible
for better soU moisture conditions than have existed for several years.

4. The oonbimation oft (1) water supply in storage. (2) the
prospeots for inoreased spring and summer runoff from snow melt and
(3) existing soil moisture oonditions, justifies the prediotion that the
1942 orop produot':on goals oan be attained. (The De>cember, 1941 report
stated --- "It will be neoessary to have an above average water supply
if' all orops are grown to meet the 1942 production goals. ")

II. SUGAR BEET ACREAGE FOR 1942

1. On the basis of 1942 oontracts thus far entered between
beet growers and refiners. offioials of the Great Western Sugar Compa-
ny predict that the> harvested sugar beet aoreage goal of 134.000 aores
(estimated in the Deoember report for the Northern Colorado Water Con-
servancy Distriot) will be attained and may possibly reach 140,000
aores.

2. The harvested beet aoreage in 1941 was approximately
104,000 acres. Henoe, the 1942 produotion goal of, say 138,000 acres,
is about 33 percent greater than 1941 produotion.

3, Attaining an estimated goal of 138,000 aores harvested in

, -2-
