o
o
(-,
.i:>
00
W

1942 would mean the produotion of about 1,794.000 tons of sugar beets
from wI,ioh refined sugar would amount to approximately 248.000 tons.

III. REFINING CAPACITIES
-

1. The present oapaoityof the 13 sugar faotories in North-
ern Colorado is adequate to refine all beets that will be produoed in
the area in 1942.

2. Data furnished by the Great Western SUgar Company show
the following faots.

(a) As an average maximum, the 13 faotories oould operate
24 hours per day for l~ to 110 days eaoh oampaign.

(b) Tl:c oombined beet slioing oapacity of the 13 faotories
is approximately 24,000 tons per 24 hour day. Hence. as an
average maxiJ;.UIIl. the factories oould slioe 2.580.000 tens of
sugar beets per o~paign.

~

(0) Average beet shrinkage from field to faotory is approxi.
mately 3.5 peroent. Therefore, beet produotion required to
furnish 2.580.000 tons for slioing would be 2,670.000 tons,
and, at an av~rage yield of 13 tons per aore. suoh produotion
would neoessitate the harvest of beets from about 205.000
aores,

3. From the data Shown above. it is obvious that the oapaoity
of sugar refineries in Northern Colorado is adequate. for present needs
and will remain so until a sustained average beet harvest from 205,000
acres is exceeded.

.

IV. DISTRICT BEET PRODUCING OAPACITY

1. Maintenanoe of an adequate and effioient crop rotation
system necessarily limits the average sugar beet aoreage on individual
farms to between 25 and 30 percent of total oropped acreage; on all
farms in a large area, the average approximates 25 percent.

. 2. The greatest aoreage from whioh orops were harvested in
the Northern Colorado Water Conservanoy Distriot WM 772,000 acres in
1930. With the aid of supplemental water supply fram Colorado. Big
Thompson, produot;.on Clould probably be maintained at or near that level
and thus, the hat".ested beet acreage oould be expected to average ap-
proximately 193,000 acres.

.

-3-
