Adjustments for rainfall, <br /> <br />deep percolation. conveyance losses, and other factors re- <br /> <br />sulted in adoption of a gross annual diversion requirement with <br /> <br />efficient use of water of 2.95 acre-feet per acre for Colorado <br /> <br />lands and 4.33 acre-feet per acre for New Mexico lands. With <br /> <br />full use of return flow below state Line reservoir. the diversion <br /> <br />requirement for New Mexico land can then be met by the release from <br /> <br />the reservoir of 3.50 acre-feet per acre. <br /> <br />The La Plata Compact <br /> <br />The La Plata Compact fixes the respective rights of <br /> <br />Colorado and New Mexico to the flow of the La Plata River and <br /> <br />sets up methods for administering the stream. The Compact, <br /> <br />which was drawn in 1922. was ratified by the legislatures of the <br /> <br />two states and by Congress. and became operative in 1925. <br /> <br />Its legality was recently upheld by the United States Supreme <br /> <br />Court.
