00
N

-'.
- .

..." ~

c

irrigable land and the aggregate thereof are as follows:

State

Number of
Holdings

Total Area
Acres

Colorado
New Mexico

43
10

4350
1190

The above tabulation is based on the acreage in the general

project area classed by the Bureau in 1933 as irrigated or

arable. The total of these two classifications ~BS found at

that time to be about 44,000 acres. Less than half of this is

now irrigated.

Most of the holdings shown above are only partially irriga-

ted and few would receive the equivalent of adequate water

for 160 acres even with the project built. As the limited water

supplies will no doubt be spread thinly over the entire area,

there ~dll consequently be only a very limited opportunity for

additional settlers.

Present Water Charges

Most of the ditches are owned by cooperative associations

and are operated on a non-profit basis. They have no secured

indebtedness, and the amount or outstanding notes and unpaid

il

bills is negligible. Annual charges for oporation and main-

tenance range from $1.75 per ~cre to ~0.10 per acre, with few

27

':!
