The total of these two classifications ~BS found at <br /> <br />that time to be about 44,000 acres. Less than half of this is <br /> <br />now irrigated. <br /> <br />Most of the holdings shown above are only partially irriga- <br /> <br />ted and few would receive the equivalent of adequate water <br /> <br />for 160 acres even with the project built. As the limited water <br /> <br />supplies will no doubt be spread thinly over the entire area, <br /> <br />there ~dll consequently be only a very limited opportunity for <br /> <br />additional settlers. <br /> <br />Present Water Charges <br /> <br />Most of the ditches are owned by cooperative associations <br /> <br />and are operated on a non-profit basis. They have no secured <br /> <br />indebtedness, and the amount or outstanding notes and unpaid <br /> <br />il <br /> <br />bills is negligible. Annual charges for oporation and main- <br /> <br />tenance range from $1.75 per ~cre to ~0.10 per acre, with few <br /> <br />27 <br /> <br />':! <br />
