'; <br />'...._~-' <br /> <br />Transportation Facilities <br /> <br />The average haul from project lands in Colorado to Durango, <br /> <br />tho marketing center of the area, is about 20 miles. Farmington <br /> <br />is about 15 miles average haul from the New Mexico Division. <br /> <br />Railroads. The narrow gage Rio Grande Southern Railroad <br /> <br />crosses the upper end of the project giving rail service to <br /> <br />Durango and by way of Telluride and Ridgway connects with the <br /> <br />standard gage Denver and Rio Grande Western line at Montrose. <br /> <br />Farmington, just south of the project, is also served by a <br /> <br />narrow gage branch of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Rail- <br /> <br />road which connects with a standard gage line at Alamosa. The <br /> <br />necessity of transferring all freight from narrow gage to <br /> <br />standard equipment slows up service and results in high costs <br /> <br />and injury to perishables. <br /> <br />Highways. Project roads are fair and excellent major high- <br /> <br />ways are available through Hesporus and Farmington to the east <br /> <br />-" <br /> <br />and the west. <br /> <br />Opportunity for Settlement <br />Farm units in this project should not contain more than 160 <br /> <br />acres of irrigated land. Holdings with more than 160 acres of <br /> <br />26 <br />
