Demand Estimates

19

Purpose

The general purpose of this sub-task Is to provide a preliminary summary of existing water
demand projections. This preliminary summary will be used to stimulate discussion of demand
forecasting at the first PAG meeting and to support initial work in the site inventory and
preliminary screening of Task 3.

Approach

1) Existing literature on water demand in the study area will be compiled and reviewed.
Experts familiar with the history of water resource investigations in the region will be
contacted to identify a comprehensive collection of secondary sources. These studies will be
reviewed, catalogued and compared in terms of underlying assumptions, years of projection
(are they within 20 to 30 years), spatial disaggregation, sectoral disaggregation, and
quantities of water projected. Secondary estimates oflong-term demands will be compiled
and reviewed as available. An initial impression of the quality of long-term demand estimates
will be developed.

2) Water demands included in the USFWS Environmental Baseline will be catalogued. The
water demands included in the Environmental Baseline will be compared to demands
identified from other secondary sources to determine the extent to which projected future
demands are already counted in the baseline flows.

3) A preliminary summary of existing water demand estimates will be developed from these
secondary sources and presented to the TSC for their review. This review will be primarily to
insure comprehensive inclusion of potential water uses in both the short- and long-term
categories and to stimulate discussion of water demand estimating criteria and procedures.

Output

The product of this sub-task will include a memorandum summarizing the preliminary review
of demand estimates and materials for presenting that summary to the PAG and other
attendees of the kickoff public meeting in Craig.

L,;
