.

.

.

307G

ventilation or open space corridors, and water storage
areas.

b. Private lands purchased by the Project will be available
for public use.

c. Undeveloped lands adjacent to Pueblo Reservoir lands may
be developed by private interests. An example of this is
the Pueblo West development.

d. Project water will supplement marginally irrigable lands
and permit increased productivity to the holders of junior
water rights in the valley.

23. Water quality effects with reference to State Water Quality
Standards are described below:

a. Potable supply.--The water currently diverted from the
Arkansas River for the city of Pueblo is of good quality
for this use. The effects of west slope diversions and
impoundment in Pueblo Reservoir should further enhance
the water quality. The proposed method of operation
whereby the conservation pool will be emptied each year
should prevent the concentration of undesirable chemical
ions and compounds such as would be experienced with an
operation involVing long holdover storage.

Downstream from Pueblo the only section of main stem in
Colorado or Kansae classified for potable use is the
portion from Fowler to the diversion for the Rocky Ford
Canal. This classification is due to the fact that the
town of Rocky Ford takes part of its water supply from the
canal. This is the only municipal surface water supply
below Pueblo in Colorado and the water at present does
not meet the U. S. Public Health Drinking Water Standards
in several categories. Rocky Ford, in the future,. plans
to obtain a much better supply from Pueblo Reservoir via
the proposed Arkansas Valley Conduit.

b.

Other uses.--The remainder of the main stem in ColoradO is
classified for industrial and irrigation use with a warm
water fishery classification being added to the last five
miles within the etate. The classifications are based on
uses current at the time the State Water Quality Standards

43
