Metropolitan Denver Growth Stimulation (Sierra Club, Enos Mills,

John L. 1. Hart).

"The Bureau of Reclamation has announced its support for 'Two Forks

Reservoir. Its feas lbility study for this reservoir, publis hed in August

1972" states that if this reservoir is built the Denver Water Board would be

able to supply water to a population in the Denver metropolitan area of

2,700,000, assuming 250 gallons per person per day... .

A more reasonable figure of gal Ions per person per day could obviously

supply more than 3,000,000. At a recent public

hearing conducted by DRCOG, one item on the agenda was a proposal to adopt

2,350,000 as an official estimate of the population of this area for the year

2000 ... .

"Tt is obvious from what has already happened to the Denver area that it

would be completely ruined by a population around 3,000,000. This might bring

temporary profits to promoters, but over the long run this uncontrolled growth

- .:~~:~
- ','

would result in much of the population leaving the area, as they have recently

left southern California under similar circumstances, and that industries would

leave or cease operation. This would be extremely bad for the existing utility

companies, banks, manufacturing companies, etc. -- quite aside from making

the region an unhappy place to live for those who remain here. One way of

avoiding this unbridled growth would be to make sure that no additional

-18-
