"

2. Western Slope Needs;

a. Environmental (Colorado Rivers Council, Fitzburgh Scott TII)

"The first premise is that without Two Forks or anything resembling it,

the Denver Water Board would have no reason to proceed with the construc-

tion of the Eagle Piney, East Gore and Straight Creek trans mountain diversion

projects.
"From an environmental standpoint the problem is simply stated: There

is no way the Denver Water Board can divert 75%.or more of the natural,

virgin stream flows out of the Piney River, for example, without ruining the

river. The Eagle Piney project is projected to produce such a yield...

"Aside from the fairly obvious fact that many streams will be dried up

or seriousLy dewatered, if these projects are buiLt, the West SLope is con-

cerned about the basic physical destruction to secluded, wild va lleys.

Projects of this magnitude will necessitate miles of access roads, pipelines

conduits, many concrete diversion structures and so on. There won't be much

water or landscape left to enjoy for future generations by the time the water board

is finished. II

b. Economic:

Though there may be economic effects on the West Slope, no statement

was included here. Instead, a statement of the Colorado River Water Conser-

vation District is 'ncluded in the Steering Committee report Appendix, relating

to this matter.

. -. - -
~:'-'~:':;-';'" ;. ,- '.
.- :,:-" ":'-:' ", ~;.'
