Archeological Site. Dolores Project

38 prehistoric and 15 historic sites were
located. Three prehistoric sites were
located in the Upper Coiorado Resource
Study area.

A contract was awarded in March 1979 for
a paleontological survey of the West
Divide Project features. The survey was
completed during August 1979. The most
significant groups of animals represented
in the collected material were those of ar-
chaic ungulate or "hoofed" groups.

San Miguel Project - Fort Lewis College,
Durango, Colo., continued the evaluation
and study of 110 prehistoric and historic
sites.

Central Utah Project - Study of the cuitural
resources of the Utah Lake - Lampton
features of the Bonneville Unit of the Cen.
tral Utah Project - was completed by
Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah.
The study was a Class I literature search
of previous archaeological work done in
the area of the project features.

Cultural resource planning continued on
the Paradox, Grand Mesa, and Animas.La
Plata Projects.

Vernal. Utah "monster"

Construction
Dolores Project - The University of Colo-
rado continued work on the Doiores Proj.
ect Cultural Resources Mitigation Pro-
gram. By the end of the year, work had
been completed and clearance for con.
struction granted on 85 historic and pre.
historic archaeological sites. Over 800 site
locations have been identified in the proj-
ect area. The major human occupation of
the project area was that of the prehistoric
Anasazi people (A.D. 500-1300).

Historic resources include Euro-American
homesteads and the towns of Big Bend
and McPhee - local timber.processing
cenfers. Because of their potentially
historic importance, all historic resources
are being considered for nomination to be
inciuded on the National Register of
Historic Places as part of the previously
determined eligible Anasazi Archaeological
District. Analysis, study, and report writing
on the recovered data are ongoing at the
Dolores Archaeological Program iabora-
tory. Legislation was proposed to relieve
the one percent limitation of project funds
for cultural resources mitigation under
Public Law 93-291 for fhe Dolores and
Animas.La Plata Projects. The extremely
high density of sites on these two projects
made this proposai essential.

Dallas Creek Project. A historical ar-
chaeological survey and mitigation con.
tract was awarded in August 1979 to con-
duct survey and mitigation for the Old
Dallas Historical Archaeological Program.
In addition to sites previously recorded, 27
additional sites have been located. The
Old Dallas Historicai Archaeological
District was nominated and determined
eligible for the National Register of
Historic Places during January 1979.

Central Utah Project. The contract for the
paleontological resource study of the
West Divide Project aiso included a
paleontological study of the Red Fleet
Dam and Reservoir, features of the Jensen
Unit of the Central Utah Project. A field
survey was completed in July 1979. The
most interesting find was a large bone (i1.
ium) of a brontosaurus-like dinosaur. It is
currently being curated at the Uintah Na.
tionai History Museum in Vernal, Utah. Ali
educationally interesting specimens col.
lected during the survey will be on dispiay
at either the museum or in the planned in-
terpretive center at the Red Fieet Damsite.

Operation

Cultural resource work on operating proj-
ects include locating, identifying, and
evaluating resources. Many projects were
conceived, planned, and constructed prior
to legisiation concerning the need to pre-
serve and protect the cuitural heritage
of the Nation. Culturai resource clear-
ance surveys were conducted for proposed
drill sites, pipelines, pumping plants,
and canals on various operating projects,
including Mancos, Emery County, and
Colibran.

17
