Fish and Wildlife

Two natural fish hatcheries are performing
important roles in the joint State-Federal
approach to meet fish stocking require-
ments.

1_ Jones Hole National Fish Hatchery is
located in a deep canyon on Jones
Hole Creek near Dinosaur National
Monument in Northeastern Utah_ In
1979, the hatchery produced 175,000
pounds of fish, which is about 62 per-
cent of capacity_ Total capacity with the
present access road is about 280,000
pounds. When the road is improved to
provide access during all weather con-
ditions, the hatchery could produce
about 300,000 pounds_ Most of the fish
are used to stock Flaming Gorge and
Fontenelle Reservoirs.

2_ Hotchkiss National Fish Hatchery is
located on the north fork of the Gun-
nison River near Hotchkiss, Colo. Its
output of 58,557 pounds of fish went
principally for stocking requirements of
Blue Mesa, Crawford, Lemon, and Silver
Jack Reservoirs in Colorado, and Na-
vajo Reservoir in Colorado and New
Mexico. During fiscal year 1979, the
Water and Power Resources Service
contracted with the Fish and Wildlife
Service to expand the raceway capacity
at the Hatchery.

One National Wildlife Refuge and three
waterfowl areas under State administra-
tion are being developed.

1. Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge
lies along the Green River below
Fontenelle Dam, Wyoming, and since
1966, has been administered by the
Fish and Wildlife Service. During fiscal
year 1979, the construction of the
refuge headquarters consisting of an
office/visitor contact building and three
residences was completed.

18

2_ Brown's Park Waterfowl Management
Area, under administration of the Utah
Division of Wildlife Resources, is
located below Flaming Gorge Reservoir
on the Green River near the Utah-Colo-
rado State line. The overall manage-
ment area is attracting numerous resi-
dent and migratory game bird popula-
tions and is increasing in public
popularity as a fishing, hunting, and
bird-watching area.

3_ Miller Mesa Waterfowl Area is on the
west shore of the Navajo Reservoir just
south of the Colorado-New Mexico
State line. A small reservoir and two
terraced ponds have been completed
and filled. About 170 acres of agri-
cultural lands have been planted with
barley, oats, wheat, and alfalfa for
wildlife management purposes. Water.
fowl use patterns indicate that birds
from other agricultural and nesting
areas in the San Juan Valley are using
the Miller Mesa site with increasing
frequency_

4. Desert Lake Waterfowl Management
Area comprises 2,480 acres of acquired
and public domain land in eastern Utah
near Huntington North Reservoir_ Ad-
ministered by the Utah Oivision of
Wildlife Resources since January 1968,
the area's contribution to waterfowl
resources management was significant.
Iy increased by rehabilitation to the
historic Desert Lake Dike and comple-
tion of five additional diked areas below
the existing impoundment.

Several projects have been initiated to
mitigate fishery and big game losses and
to work out problems caused by the con-
struction of CRSP features:

Curecanti Unit, Colorado: Completed the
purchase of 4,500 acres of land for big
game mitigation and contracted with the
Colorado Division of Wildlife for road ac-
cess to these lands.

Flaming Gorge Unit, Utah: One thousand
six hundred fifty acres of land was pur-
chased at Flaming Gorge for big game
mitigation. The completion of the modifi-
cation of power intake structures for water
temperature control was completed with
the final payment to the contractor. A con-
tract was awarded to the Utah Division of
Wildlife Resources for a fishery study on
the Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam
to determine the effects of the power in-
take structures modification.

Lyman Project, Utah and Wyoming: The
Water and Power Resources Service con.
tracted with the Forest Service to conduct
land acquisitions for big game mitigation
on the Lyman Project.

Seedskadee Project, Wyoming: The
second year of a three-year fishery study
on the Green River below Fontenelle Dam
was completed_
