<br />..c <br />ClO <br />00 <br />N <br />o <br />o <br /> <br />NEWS RELEASE-Page 2 <br />FIRST COLORAOO RIVER SALINITY CONTROL PROJECT AG"REEME1>'T SIGNED <br />Water and Power Resources Service, Grand Junction, Colorado <br />March 11, 1980 <br /> <br />lining 6.8 miles of canal and improving 34.2 miles of laterals in the <br /> <br />\ <br /> <br />Mack-Loma area. <br /> <br />The purpose of this construction will be to evaluate the effective- <br /> <br />ness of canal and lateral rehabilitation for salinity reduction on the <br /> <br />entire Grand Valley Unit of the Colorado River Basin Salinity Control <br /> <br />ho j ect . <br /> <br />Landowners involved in the Stage One area will be contacted by <br /> <br />representatives of Water and Power in the near future to discuss the <br /> <br />rights-of-way required for construction. Construction of a field <br /> <br />station and lining of a portion of the Government Highline Canal are <br /> <br />expected to be initiated before the end of this calendar year. Im- <br /> <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />provement of the lateral system, using buried pipe, could also begin <br /> <br />this calendar year, with approval of legislation which is now before <br /> <br />the Congress. After completion of the Stage One facilities, the Grand <br /> <br />Valley Water Users will be responsible for their operation and mainte- <br /> <br />, ,i <br /> <br />nance. At that time, a careful evaluation of the iJnpacts of these <br /> <br />-~ <br /> <br />facilitie<; will be made before future areas will be considered for <br /> <br />rehabilitation. These future programs will require additional approval <br /> <br />by the Secretary of the .Interior and the Grand Valley Water Users <br /> <br />Association. <br /> <br />Regional Director Plummer, in signing the contract said, "This <br /> <br />is indeed a landmark occasion, the first major agreement with local <br /> <br />interests for implementing the basinwide Coiorado River Salinity <br /> <br />Control Program." <br />
