Inadequate water supplies often impair the health of com-

munity inhabitants. The economy of Kansas is very dependent upon

the production of livestock and farm products. Domestic water

(especially in rural areas) and stock water are usually obtained from

ground water supplies. Many areas in Kansas are limited in this

resource. Per capita domestic and livestock use requirements and

projections for each ten year period to year 2020 will be determined

in this study.

Irrigation. The development of irrigation is desirable to

provide economic opportunities for the State's expanding population

and to provide the products required by the expanding national economy.

Irrigated crops are espeeially needed for those industries dependent

upon a consistent annual yield of high quality farm products. Factors

such as expanding population needs, irrigation, better understanding

of climate and soil, and prices received for farm commodities will

have much influence on the cropping pattern projections for the

State of Kansas. The ever-increasing need for livestock for human

consumption will demand crops suitable for livestock feed. Other

state and national needs must be considered in this study. Cropping

pattern projections to year 2020 will be determined. Per-acre-per-

area water requirements and projections will be determined in this

study.

11
