~Q182G

DESCRIPTION OF WORK ITEMS

Economic Base Study and Projections

Neither the Bureau of Reclamation nor the Kansas Water Resources

Board have the immediate expertise to make the economic base study and

projections. Upon investigation it was found that Kansas State

University has been working on problems of a similar nature; that it

has made compilations of much of the basic cata needed for such a

study; and that it has an BO-item matrix model set up which would be
very useful in the type of study needed. Therefore, it was decided

to contract with Kansas State University to prepare the economic base

study. The University will prepare a report which projects population,

employment, income, production, and value of production in the State

of Kansas for each tenth year, beginning with the year 1970 and ending

with the year 2020. By appraising the future needs, the report will
furnish guidance to Federal, State, and local agencies so that they

can formulate comprehensive plans for the orderly and efficient develop-

ment of land and water resources.

.

An economic base study will be made by the University which will

be developed within the framework of economic data of the State and

the Nation. As the result of studies by the Office of Business

Economics, Department of Commerce, and the Economic Research Service

for the Water Resources Council, some basin and regional trade area

data have been completed and will soon be available.
