Jordanelle
Dam and
Reservoir

r- - .

jordaneJle Dam and Reservoir
will be the key feature of the
,"-1unicipal and Industrial System.
After studying several alrernatives,
a site 6 miles north of lIeber City
on the Provo River was selected.
Here water descends through
natural rock formations that
will serve as massive abutments
and foundation for the 1+!h
million cubic.foot earthen
Jordanelle Dam.
The dam will measure 296 feet
high and have a crest length of
about 2,800 fect, with a crest
width of 45 feet to accommo-
date U.S. Highway 189. The
dam will hold 320,000 acre-
feet of water in the Jordanelle
Reservoir formed in The valleys
behind the dam.

The d:lffi \",'ill be operated to
control forecasted floods by
providing Storage space to hold
high flows that can be safelv
di~charged over a period o(
time. Such a design provides

--

-'

a margin of safety required by
nev.' safety standards,
Jordanelle Reservoir will have
a modified "L" shape, with a
surface area of about 3 ,070
acres, The north arm will ex-
tend .Ph miles up Drain Tunnel
Creek and its tributary, Ross
Creek. The east arm will extend
5 miles up the Provo River.
Water withheld at Jordanelle
Reservoir .....ill have to be re.
placed in Utah Lake since all
the Provo River waters, except
for flood flows in high runoff
years, are already appropriated,
Replacement [0 Utah Lake \vill
be accomplished by releasing
water from Strawberry Reser.
voir \'ia Diamond Fork and
Spanish Fork Rivers. or from
evapotranspiration salvage of
Utah Lake waters or from pro.
ject return flows accumulating

.,

in Utah Lake. Two dikes are
planned for Utah Lake. One
at Provo Bay and the other at
Goshen Bay to accomplish the
reduction in evaporation.
During the early years of op.
eration, larger amounts of water
\"ill be imported from Straw-
berry Reservoir to Utah Lake.
\Vhen the project is in full op-
eration, imported supplies from
Strawberry Reservoir will be
necessary only in dry years.
The savings from these 1\\'0
dikes from evaporation losses
and other recoveries will be
enough water to meet the needs
of about 400,000 new people.
After the Municipal and Indus.
trial System and other systems
of the' Bonneville Unit c'ome
into full operation, imported
supplies from Strawberry Re-
servoir will be necessary only
in dry years.
