<br />. <br /> <br />All the things we cherish are on trial... All the things that made us great! Our <br />belief in the nobility of man as an individual and a child of God, rather than slave of the <br />State. Our reverence for law. Our pass'ionate avowal of such things as Faith, and honor <br />and ethics and decency. The things that come to us from the Old Testament and through <br />the New. Each of these things that comes, stands on trial today. Most important of all.... <br />don't think that we're fooling anybody. The rest of the world is watching us! They are <br />watching to see how we cherish these things that the blood of martyrs watered for us and <br />the flesh of martyrs nourished. And in the places where already the red tide has engulfed <br />the people, where they have lost these rights they failed to cherish. They now are watching <br />us. <br /> <br />~ <br /> <br />What does our constitution and our Declaration of Independence mean? What is the <br />new idea that revolutionized the world? It was a simple idea that all men are important as <br />individuals. That men were free to plan and choose their own goals. That men had as <br />individuals equality of opportunity to act effectively in pursuit of those goals.., .And this <br />great revolutionary idea permitted them to retain the fruit of their labor, or to retain as <br />much of the goal as they had achieved. This is diametrically opposed to <br />all of the world's history, where men were slaves of the state or each other..., serfs bound <br />by custom and tradition.,. And the despot was all powerful.. , all potent... The counter <br />revolution has been instigated by those who say once again it is impossible for man as an <br />individual to achieve the goals envisioned for him; and it is necessary for the all- powerful <br />state to rule his every action and provide an equitable division of the results of his labors. <br /> <br />This is the era of Dachau and Buchenwald, and the extermination of six-million Jews! <br />This is the lawlessness that engulfs our land with pornography and debauchery widespread, <br />with a mounting crime rate and a disregard for law that is appalling. All over the world <br />the ligh~s of love are winking out, one by one, under this red tide of Communism, and the <br />tide laps at ou r very door. <br /> <br />Somehow, while we do not deny these terrible things have happened and still go on <br />happening, it is always the "others" who do them. <br /> <br />Actually, man has done these th ings. Even if we are not accessories to the crime, we <br />are always, thanks to our human nature, potential criminals. <br /> <br />I n reality, Jung reminds us, perhaps up to now we have merely lacked suitable oppor- <br />tunity to be drawn into the infernal melee. None of us stands outside humanity's black <br />collective shadow. <br /> <br />Jung calls for Christian love and says that where love stops, power begins, and <br />violence and terror. In all seriousness, and he warns that this is the time we may lose <br />all which Christianity treasured up for us, This is the profound warning of one of the <br />world's greatest thinkers today. And he finally asks this question, which I in turn ask <br />you. "Does the individual know that he is the make weight that tips the scales?" <br /> <br />- 27 - <br /> <br />
