call for Obtaining and improving
nearby Jackson Lake for
recreatior. and fish and wildlife
use.
All of this work has its price,
howllver. Latest estimates were
made in 1975 and total $139
million. Much 01 that cost will
be recovered over the years,
though, through the sale of waler
to irrigators and other users of
project features. In addition,
power revenues from the Pick-
Sloan Missouri Basin Program
will assist with repayment of
project costs. Only a small
percentage of irrigable land in
the project area will be taken
out of. production through
construction of the unit.
Increased agricultural
production due to supplemental
irrigation water and benefits
from the project, including
flood control, recreation, and
fish and wildlife, are expected
to total more than $21 million
annually.
A detailed environmental
statement concludes that
beneficial effects of the
project will outweigh
detrimental effects. Perhaps
the most serious impact wilt
be to the human environment.
As with many construction
projects of this type and size,
people, farms, and businesses
will have to be relocated. And
although each family will be
adequately and fairly
compensated for its property
and moving costs, other
"human" losses occur that
can't be measured in
financial terms.
