Permission to use motorized machinery in the

"Primitive Areas" can be given only by the Regional or Chief Forester. This

permission is rarely granted except in cases of emergency.

To determine the impact of these two diversions on stream flows, the surface

water records were reviewed. Only one water-stage recorder was located on the

Los Pinos River in the area under study and this gage was discontinued in 1954.

The

gage was located
S (
snowslide canyon

approximately 100 feet south of the confluence of Los Pinos

and

and approximately 2~ miles below the diversions. The two

diversions are in operation chiefly during the months of May, June, July, and

August. The gage records indicate that during this diversion period there is

sufficient water below the diversions to support both fish and wildlife. Mini-

mum discharges for the river could not be determined since they occurred during

periods of no gage-height. Shown below are the mean monthly flows from 1945

thru 1954.

Mean Monthly Discharge (CFS) For Los Pinos River
100' Below Snow Slide Canyon (1945 to 1954)
L-/

OCT.
