They extend across the state line and dis- <br />charge separately into the Colorado River in Utah. These two <br />strearr. basins in Colorado are bounded on the north by the drain- <br />age basin of the Colorado River, on the south by the drainage <br />basin of the Dolores River and on the east by the drainage <br />basin 'of the Gunnison Ri vel'. <br />The drainage basin encon,passes an area of 10,162 <br />square: miles (9,912 for the Colorado River basin and 250 for <br />the Little Dolores River and Coates Creek basins) and in- <br />cludes' all or portions of Grand, Sun~it, Routt, Eagle, Gar- <br />field,'Pitkin, Gunnison, Rio Blanco and ~esa Counties. The <br />basin is approxi~ately 200 n;iles long east and west and J6 <br />r;,iles Wide north and south at n,axiniun. sections. It encon;- <br />passesiabout 10% of the land area of the State of Colorado <br />and 26* of the drainage basin of the entire Colorado River <br />in the 'State of Colorado. <br />Clin,atic conditions vary fron; that of near desert <br />in the lower section (elevation of 4,300 feet) to heavy pre- <br />cipitation in the high altitude area of the upper perimeter <br />of the basin . The Continental Divide forn,s the east boundary j <br />the Elk: Kountains, Grand r.:esa and the Uncol,.pahgre Plateau <br />forn, the south boundary j and the I\Thi te River Plateau and the <br />Bookcliff ~ountains form the north boundary.
