and North Lakes; Spanish Peaks area; Fisher's Peak, Cucharas and
Apishapa Pass and Valleys; San Isabel National Forest: and several
historic resources, Trinidad Lake should significantly complement
snd sdd to the diversity of these existing resources, providing an

additional attraction for tourism. An increase in tourist trade

and perhaps recreation-oriented industries may be expected, which

would aid the economy of the community.
4. Biotic Communities.
a. Faunal communities. Results of meetings and written

correspondence among the Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Sport Fisheries

and Wildlife, representatives of the Colorado Division of Wildlife, and

general field surveys by the Corps indicate that the impact of exist-

ing wildlife and wildlife habitat will be small and relative in-

significant. Species that will be primarily affected are those few

rodents (mice, rats, gophers, squirrels, chipmunks, etc.), mustelids

(weasels, skunks, and mink), shrews, raccoons, cottontail rabbits

and various reptiles and amphibians (herpetofauna) that are common

to the reservoir area. It is anticipated that most displaced animals

will relocate in contiguous areas of suitable habitat if specific

niches are not filled to capacity. Should these niches be at capacity,

there will be a temporary stress placed on neighboring communities until

the surplus pressure and individuals are eliminated. A small number

of individuals along the route of the relocated railroad, State Hir.h-

way 12, the county road, and in the recreation areas may be displaced

or disturbed. It is not anticipated that recreational activity would

significantly disturb wildlife in contiguous areas since access will

not be resdi1y svsi1ab1e.

IV-6

.

.
