O~1510

... The transfer of storage rights for 20.000 acre-feet of water

from privately-owned Model Reservoir to Trinidad Lake may result
in a small loss of waterfowl habitat in the reservoir area. This
could lead to a reduction in waterfowl-use and hunting opportunities

at this site. The marshy areas in and adjacent to this reservoir

and the habitat they provide for varioua wildlife speciea. including
waterfowl, will probably not experience any change. Local 10nR-
time reaidenta of the area indicate that theae small marshes were

present before Model Reservoir was constructed. Early estimates

by the Rureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife were that 500 man-daya
of waterfowl hunting would be lost annually at the reaervoir.
While detrimental to a few select species, the converse. enhance-
ment of faunal communities. will also be true. Newly created.
improved or expanded habitat or ecological systems will favor

the presence or development of some species previously limited or

excluded because of habitat requirements. Aside from the develop-

ment of greatly expanded aquatic community. the lake will provide

an excellent resting area and some feed for migratory waterfowl

previously limited or excluded by the paucity of surface water. It

is anticipated that additional waterfowl and also an increased number

of shorebirds will be drawn to the lake. The proximity of the lake

to the agricultural area ahould favorably serve these wildlife forma.

Raptors may find an increased aource of prey in and adjacent to the

lake and water-associated mammals. e.g.. beaver. muskrata. mink.

and raccoona could benefit to a minor extent.

.

IV-7
