<br />r-- <br />toO <br />C\l <br />C..; <br />. ) <br /> <br />CHAPTER II <br /> <br />UNIT SETTING <br /> <br />'- <br /> <br />Extension. <br /> <br />The Kiefer Extension flows ln a circuitous route for 15.4 <br /> <br />miles and utilizes 37 independent laterals to serve 5,970 acres of land. <br /> <br />The last quarter mile of the Kiefer Extension is concrete lined. <br /> <br />With a total length of 14 miles, the Grand Valley Mainline Canal is <br /> <br />located about 1 mile south of and parallel to the Grand Valley Highline <br /> <br />Canal and terminates just north of Fruita. <br /> <br />About 0.2 mile from its <br /> <br />beginning, the Grand Valley Mainline Canal delivers water to the Inde- <br /> <br />pendent Ranchmen's Ditch. <br /> <br />The Grand Valley Mainline and 60 independent <br /> <br />laterals provide irrigation water to approximately 7,760 acres of land. <br /> <br />The Independent Ranchmen's Ditch extends for about ll.8 miles <br /> <br />parallel to and south of the Grand Valley Mainline. The ditch delivers <br /> <br />water to 35 independent laterals to serve about 2,310 acres of land. <br /> <br />The Grand Valley Canal, the Grand Valley Highline Canal, the Grand <br /> <br />Valley Mainline Canal, the Mesa County Ditch, the Kiefer Extension, and <br /> <br />the Independent Ranchmen's Ditch are all owned and operated by the Grand <br /> <br />Valley Irrigation Company. All the laterals supplied by the Grand Valley <br /> <br />Canal system are individually owned and operated by the irrigators they <br /> <br />serve, and some of the lateral owners have incorporated for the purpose <br /> <br />of making .assessments and improvements to their systems. The maintenance <br /> <br />on unincorporated laterals is accomplished voluntarily by the lateral <br /> <br />owners. <br /> <br />Palisade Irrigation District <br /> <br />The Palisade Irrigation District serves about 3,710 acres of land <br /> <br />north of the Grand Valley Canal between Palisade and Grand Junction. The <br /> <br />system consists of the 9.l-mile-long Price Ditch and l09 privately owned <br /> <br />laterals. <br /> <br />Additionally, laterals and turnouts from the Government <br /> <br />14 <br />
