The Federal portion of the system is basically the Grand Valley <br /> <br />Project, constructed between 1912 and 1917 by the U.S. Reclamation <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Service (now the Bureau of Reclamation), and which now carries water to <br /> <br />the Palisade, Mesa County, and Orchard Mesa Irrigation Districts in <br /> <br />addition to its own facilities. <br /> <br />Private developments <br /> <br />Grand Valley Irrigation Company <br /> <br />The Grand Valley Irrigation Company system serves about a 28,600- <br /> <br />acre strip of land north of the Colorado River and south of the lands <br /> <br />served by the Government Highline Canal and the Price Ditch. The princi- <br /> <br />pal feature of the system is the Grand Valley Canal which diverts from <br /> <br />the Colorado River at Palisade. <br /> <br />The Grand Valley Canal is about 12.5 miles long. At about 7.6 miles <br /> <br />from the point of diversion, water is diverted to the Mesa County Ditch, <br /> <br />paralleling the canal. about 1 mile south of it. <br /> <br />The Grand Valley <br /> <br />Canal, utilizing 52 independent laterals, serves about 4,230 acres of <br /> <br />land. <br /> <br />The Mesa County Ditch and its 19 independent laterals provide <br /> <br />water to approximately 1,090 acres. <br /> <br />At its terminus, the Grand Valley <br /> <br />Canal divides into the Grand Valley Highline and the Grand Valley Main- <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />line Canals. <br /> <br />The Grand Valley Highline continues for 23.5 miles parallel to and <br /> <br />roughly 2 miles south of the Government Highline Canal. The canal and <br /> <br />80 laterals serve 7,240 acres. The Grand Valley Highline canal termin- <br /> <br />ates north of Fruita by delivering its remaining water to the Kiefer <br /> <br />13 <br />
