.,

.

.

.'

The estimated cost of the dam and reservoir is $4,092,000: based
on July 1950 prices. The distribution system is estimated to coat ,467~OOO.

Local Interest
-

Project investigations by. the Bureau of Reclamation were initiated
as a result of requests of a few local people whose chief interests were
recreation and flood control. The interest of those involved by project
development in regard to irrigation as well as flood control has not been
fully determined.

Conclusions

Development of Palo Duro Project is limited by Article 5 (a) of
the Canadian River Compact entered into by the States of Texas, New Mexico
and Oklahoma:

"The right of Texas to impound any of the waters
of North Canadian River shall be limited to storage on
tributaries of said River in Texas for municipal uses
for household and domestic uses, livestock watering,
and the irrigation of lands which are .cultivated solely
for the purpose of providing food and feed for the
households and domestic livestock actually living or
kept on the property."

Coldwater Creek Pro~ect
-

General

Coldwater Creek heads in a series of springs on the old X.I.T.
ranch on the High Plains of northwestern Dallam County, Texas. Its
course is almost due east to near the east boundary of Sherman County,
and then northeast across the northwest corner of Hansford County and the
southeast. corner of Texas County, Oklahoma, to its junction with the
North Canadian River 20 miles east of Guymon, Oklahoma.

Reconnaissance surveys for potential project development were
made of the basin in 1942. TW9 possibilities for storage were found on the
main stem of Coldwater Creek and consideration was given to developing
irrigation for narrow valley'lands below these reservoirs as well as to
storage for recreation and propagation and fish and wildlife.

Pro~ect Irlorks

Stratford dam and reservoir site is on the main stem of Coldwater
Creek, seven miles below the town of Stratford, Texas. The dam site con-
trols an active drainage area of 220 square miles. The dam would involve
about 560,000 cubic yards of material.

The reservoir site consists mostly of unimproved pasture land
with no relocation problems. At maximum elevation, the reservoir woUld
have an estimated capacity of 17,000 acre-feet.

37
