-:.

.

.

Throughout a distance of about 10 miles below the dam site, there
are 800 to 1,000 acres of fair quality lands, existing in small disassoci-
ated bodi.es, on either side of the stream channel. Those lr,nds could be
irrigated by gravity canal, although such service would not be economical.
Tbere is also a possibility of pumping from Stratford reservoir some 60 feet
to lands on the high plains north of the creek. Ample high quality lands
are available near the reservoir site.

The Stratford reservoir site is well located with respect to the
town of Stratford, Texas, for use as a recreation area. Benefits from
storage for propagation and fish and wildlife would also be available.

The Alexander dam site is on the main stem of Ccldwater Creek in
northwest Hansford County, Texas, 18 miles south of Guymon, Oklahoma. It
controls a contributing drainage area of 450 square miles. The dam would
contain about 350,000 cubic yards of embankment.

~ll of the reservoir area is pasture land, but very good improve-
ments of the Alexander Ranch and a county highway are in the upper end of
the reservoir right-of-way. At Miximum capacity, the reservoir would pro-
vide approximately 14,320 acre-feet of storage.

Thero are between 900 and 1,100 acres of fair-quality, irrigable
land along the valley alluvium between Alexander dam site and the Tex~s -
Oklahoma state line, lying in small disassociated bodies on either side of
the stream channel. A distribution system to sorve these lands would not
be an economical one. Several small canals would be required, each
diverting from the river at an appropriate point eithor by pu~ping or by
diversion dams. Large rivor losses could be expectod from reservoir
releases into tho wide, sundy stream bed.

In addition to storage for irrigation purposes, the Alexander
reservoir site would be suitable for propagation of fish and wildlife and
. recreation.

Local Interest

At the time investigations were made, in 1942, thore did not
appear to be any groat public interest in ~eBar~oir construction on
Coldwater Creek.

f.2!lclusiona

There is little possibility of developing irrigation in,Coldwater
Creek Basin. The cost of storage for water supply, obtained by reservoir
construction would be relatively high and the cost of serving the lands
togother with the cost of operation would be high. Also, wator resource
developmont on Coldwater Creek is limited by Article 5 (a) of tho Canadian
River Compact entered into by the states of Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahomal

"The right of Texas to impound any of the waters of
North Canadian River shall be limited to storage on tribu-
taries of said River in Toxus for municipal uses, for '

38
