.

.

..

POTENTIAL PROJECTS

NORTH CANADIAN RIVER BASIN

Palo Duro Project

General
--

Palo Duro Project is on Palo Duro Creek, a tributary of the North
Canadian River, in Hansford County, Texas. It would provide for the irriea-
tion of about 2,200 acres of valley lands and would also provide for recrea.
tion and some inoidental flood control. Serving of irrigation water to the
project landS could be accomplished either by a single gravity flow canal or
by a series of pump canals along the stre~. Initial costs of either
delivery system would be about the same, but the pump canal system would
demand greater operation and maintenance costs.

Project lrJorks

Th€ project would consist of a dam and reservoir, about 15 miles
of main canal, ~,d acout 2,200 acres of irrigable lands.

The dam site is in Sections 64 and 73 of H & T RR Co., Survey
Block No. 45. It controls a drainage area of 552 square miles, of which
236 square miles are only partially contributing. The dam would consist
of a rolled earth embankment about 1,450 feet long and about 86 feet high
above stream bed. Following is an area capacity table of the reservoir
site.

Allocation Total Capacity Area Elevafion
Item (acre-feet) (acre-feet) (acres) (feet)
Streambed 0 0 0 1874.0
Sediment 9,000 9,000 720 1915.0
Conservation 4,000 13,000 940 1920.0
Irrigati:on 7,000 20,000 1,200 1927.0
Flood control .34,000 54,000 2,140 1947.0
Superstorage 22,500 76,500 2,800 1955.5

The main canal would extend downstream from the dam along the left
bank of Palo Duro Creek valley for a distance of about 15 miles. It would
serve 2,200 acres of land and would have an initial capacity of 45 cfs and
a terminal capacity of 17 cfs. Laterals are required for only 300 acres of
the project area, the remainder being served from the main canal.

36
