4

{,
1

Act and its amendments authorized the construction of four salinity
~ control units and the expeditious completion of identified salinity
o
~ control projects for feasibility reports. These units, Grand Valley,
Las Vegas Wash, Crystal Geyser, and Paradox Valley and Grand Valley
are currently under construction. Crystal Geyser, which was originally
authorized, has been indefinitely postponed because of a poor cost
effectiveness, and Las Vegas Wash const~~ction has been deferred so
that a reevaluation can be made of the hydro-salinity system and
resolution of the controversy surrounding consturction of an advanced

waste treatment facility and the future development of the wash.

Meeker Dome has been added to the original list of planning studies,

the Price River Unit and the San Rafael River Unit have been combined

into a single unit" and the old Littlefield Springs Unit has now been
expanded to the Lower Virgin River unit.
The estimated salt load reduction from the salinity control units
considered in this review when fully implemented is 1,695,000 tons.
As was done in 1975 and 1978 using the Bureau's salt routing
model, the Forum made projections of future salinity in the Colorado
River. A major factor influencing the results of ,the salt routing
analyses is the amount of salt entering the river system under base
conditions. When work on the 1978 review .~S near completion, it
became apparent that the input data used in 1975 and 1978 overesti-
mated the salt load. As part of this review a study was undertaken
to develop input which would more accurately reflect present conditions.
Analyses were made of the salt tonnages associated with inflow into
Lake Powell, ungaged inflow Lees Ferry to Grand Canyon and salt gains
and losses in Lake Powell. Using the results of these studies, revised

~ ,.

. .;, J~. ..c.i;,,,,- ;':,:.-,0.. _, _~", ~

",:J;,i
i.i _ -"
~&_j:):-~-;,-~:-
