Whittemore Strain Gaqe Measurements

A set of measurements were made in November 1974 ref1eeting the lower

reservoir elevations. Six deep-set strain gage measurement points were
installed in the existing surface systems to discriminate relative
to the degree of suspected temperature effect on the skin of the rock.,
The final Whittemore Strain Gage Monitoring System consists of 7 surface
and 3 deep-set points in the right leg of the bridge, 11 surface and 3
deep-set points in the left leg, and 2 surface control points ina rock
dOI1l! unrelated to the bridge. Six surfaee points designated Micrometer
Station #5 are,instal1ed in a crevice beo~een, the left leg of the bridge
and a massive rock dome south of the bridge. This should permit monitoring
of the swayi ng or, bendi ng movement of the bri dge as it may be induced by

wind or thermal action.

Currently the Whittemore measurements provide positive monitoring data

ref1eoting reaction of the stress relief joints to solar thermal

differential.

The joints tend tCl close during ~Iarm temperatures and

open duri n9 cooler tempera tu res.

The next status report should include

3

~-::,=

,It
~~
:>-7#
'Y~i!:-'.

'r
