The report describes the hydrologic and geologic components of the
South Platte River aquifer system, in an area of about 950 square miles along
the South Platte River between Henderson, Colo., and the Colorado-Nebraska State
line. The report is the result of a cooperative study by the U.S. Geological
Survey and the Colorado Division of Water Resources, Office of the State Engi-
neer, and the Colorado Water Conservation Board. '

The purpose of the investigation was to describe hydrologic and geologic compo-
nents of the area, emphasizing information that would be needed by water plan-
ners, administrators, and legislative bodies to manage the system. In the South
Platte River valley, surface water and ground water are components of one hy-
draulic system, and water-management planners need to consider the interrelation
between these two components. The description of the hydrologic system and its
operation as presented in this newly released report provide a foundation upon
which such an analysis can be made. The report deseribes surface-water flows,
diversion, and application; description of the physical dimensions and character
of the valley-fill aquifer, location and rates of ground-water diversions, and
quantitative determination of various elements of the hydrologic cycle--~uch as
ground-water recharge, return flow to the river, and evapotranspiration.

The principal use of water in the study area is for irrigation. During 1947-70
the surface-water diversions averaged 981,000 acre-feet annually and ground-water

,.O\..\JT/0,\,

'<-~<<;~(>
'" ~
(} '-\
_ m
'& '"
"'- ;t
-,j\'~ ~
7?'?6_191Q rEi

k!f
~--:.

.~:.~. .'
" - -'~'.
~~~~
-/....:,..
~\<;/~
. ,,~.-..-
ff
~tt~~~
"';'.':'"
,." .-
~.:.~.;:-
~y..~;:::
~t/~~~.
~i;:'_ ':~:
:~~.:>;<
~2:.~t_
u;.;.-.....
i~{:;.~~J
~!;;~..~..'
~;,/s
;,."{:.-:::,:
i~f;;f:.;:
~i~:~
........,...
I
~..-... .".
2M{;~
~t~~
I
It
i~A?}t
:':~:_;::"~
..;,J.~;~ -':
"~Z::};
~;}:t~t.
;>"'):;'"
'.~:,.': -~:-:
.....~_.-
.,.
.
,
,d.,.,
:"'.
