from the U.S. Geological Survey, and diversion records,
primarily for irrigation and municipal uses, available from the
Colorado State Engineer's Office. A review will be maQe of the
U.S. Water and Power Resources Service's "point-flow" study of

the South Platte River system between Denver and Julesburg

(U.S. Geological Survey gaging stations 06714000 and

06764000). In this study, monthly and annual streamflows are

accounted for upstream and downstream from each inflow or

diversion structure. The updated point-flow study covers the

period from January 1931 through September 1978. To the extent

possible, information for the flow characterization of the

South Platte River system will utilize results of this point

flow survey and statistical summaries of historical streamflow

records of the 0.5. Geological survey. Effects of stream

regulation and of transbasin water imports from Colorado's West

Slope will be taken into account in evaluating the historical

time sequence of streamflow and diversion records.

A total of 8 mainstem South Platte River sites and

5 tributary sites have been selected as indicator point

locations for the river system flow characterization

(Table 1). Historical hydrological data at these indicator

locations will be analyzed, keeping in mind that numerous

changes (such as transbasin imports, irrigation diversions and

return flows and ground water withdrawals) are occurring between

these locations that are affecting streamflows in the South

-4-
