Floodplain manage-
ment achieves or strives for appropriate land use through a mixture
of traditional nonstructural measures (such as: land use adjust-
ments, flood warning systems, zoning, land acquisition, natural
parks, greenbelts or recreational areas) and structural measures
(such as: retention reservoirs, levees, or diversion structures).
Protection and enhancement of the natural floodplain resource will
help eliminate future disasters.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs will coordinate with the Tribes to
encourage adoption of floodplain management policies and plans.
Advice on appropriate types of floodplain management measures can
be provided as necessary from the following agencies: FEMA, the
Bureau of Reclamation (DOl), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (DA),
Soil Conservation Service (USDA).

Action Agency:

Bureau of Indian Affairs (DOl)

Financing:

None required

Schedule:

Bureau of Indian Affairs (DOl) will meet with
the Tribes within 30 days

21
