<br />A total of 28 percent of the State of Colorado is underlain by coal
<br />deposits, of which about 18 billion tons of coal can be surface mined.
<br />Future development of coal will affect water use and availability in
<br />Colorado.
<br />
<br />To meet the need for water-resources data related to coal develop-
<br />ment, the U.S. Geological Survey has expanded water-data-collection
<br />activities and initiated three interpretive studies in the Yampa River
<br />basin, northwestern Colorado. The data-collection activities and inter-
<br />pretive studies are being conducted in cooperation with Federal, State,
<br />and local agencies. The problems, objectives, and approach to the
<br />hydrologic studies are described in the report, "Hydrologic studies of
<br />the U.S. Geological Survey related to coal development in Colorado."
