The U.S. Geological Survey, Department of the Interior, announced today the
availability of a report describing the hydrologic conditions, including
the shallow water table, of the small alluvial aquifer in the vicinity of
Lake Minnequa, in the city of Pueblo.

The alluvial aquifer, which is approximately 3 miles (4.8 kilometres) in
width, extends from St. Charles Reservoir No. 3 north to the Arkansas
River.

The principal source of recharge to the aquifer is seepage from Lake Min-
nequa, St. Charles Reservoir No.2, and St. Charles Reservoir No.3. In
the vicinity of Lake Minnequa, a shallow water table and resulting water-
logged soil is caused primarily by the lake. Ground-water flow into the
waterlogged area and a low hill to the east of the lake, which impedes the
regional ground-water flow to the northeast, also contribute to the shallow
water table. Possible methods for eliminating the problem include lowering
the water level in Lake Minnequa, placing a network of dewatering wells, or
constructing a drainage system in the waterlogged area.

The report, U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations 76-53,
"Water logging in an alluvial aquifer near Lake Minnequa, Pueblo, Colorado,"
by Patrick J. Emmons, was prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooper-
ation with the city of Pueblo.

~O~UDO~~ Because of the limited supply, duplicated copies of the report are not
~~~~available for general distribution. In the near future, the report
o ~ill be available in microfiche or hard-copy form from the National
