.

.

,

3. Leaching
4. '.ater-table conditions will be made
(1) Irrigation -
a. The plots were flooded with approximately 4 A.-in. of
irrigation water in November, 1956.
b. An approximate 4 A.-in. irrigation will be made as early
as is feasible in the spring. Surface irrigation will be
applied thereafter as is necessary to maintain the stands
of grass.
c. Sub irrigation ~1ill be practiced to maintain the water-
table level at 22 inches, if possible.
(2) Fertilizer -
All plots will receive an application of 50 Ib./A. of N
fertilizer.

C. Yield Results:

A portion of each plot will be harvested and yield deter-
minations will be made.

D. Statistical Analysis:

Ana4rsis will be made for the 10 replicated grass varieties.

IX. Experiment VI - Alfalfa Variety Nursery:

A. Objectives:

To determine the adaptability, stanis, and yields of several
alfalfa varieties on ~claimed saline-sodium soils.

B. General Procedure:

1. Land preparation - The variety trial will be planted on a
strip which was surface plowed in 1956.
2. Amendments - Gypsum at the rate of 1 T./A. was added in 1956.
3. Leaching - The strip was leached with 24 A.-in. of water in
1956. An additional 4 A.-in. of water will be applied in 1957
prior to seeding for additional leaching and to facilitate
seedling emergence.
4. Fertilizer - Phosphorus fertilizer at the rate of JOO lb.
P20s/A. will be broadcast and disked into the surface prior
to seeding the plots.
5. Seeding - Each plot will be seeded at the rate of 8 Ib./A.
for each variety in rows s1)aced 1 foot apart.
6. 1.ater-table conditions - The location of the variety trial
will be within a subirrigated area. The water-table level
will be maintained at 22 inches, if possible.
7. Surface irrigation - The plots ~lill be irrigated as often as
is necessary to establish and maintain a uniform stand.
8. Statistical design - The varieties will be arranged in a
randomized block design, replicated 4 times.

- 7 -

r .~ i~ ';' ,..':)
,-J.., "....,..,., 'I.
