.

.

.

9. Yield results - Stand counts will be taken on the areas to
be harvested. Yields for. each variety will be reported in
1958. The yield data will be analyzed statistically when
yield results are obtained.

X. Experiment VII - Uniformity Trial:

A. Objectives:

To detemine soil uniformity on strips which .7111 be used
in succeeding seasons for a fertility trial.

B. General Procedure:

1. Land preparation - The unifomity trial will be conducted on
a strip which waS plowed to a depth of 36 inches with a
moldboard plOl.r, a strip which ,,,as chiselled to a depth of 36
inChes, and a strip which was surface plOWed to a depth of
4-5 inches with a moldboard plow. The strips were leveled
for the application of surface irrigation.
Amendments - Gypsum at the rate of 1 T ./A. was applied and
disked into the surface in 1956.
Leaching - The strips .rere leached with 24 A.-in.
in 1956. An additional 4 A.-in. of water will be
1957 prior to seeding for additional leaching and
seedling emergence.
4. lolater-table conditions - The location of the unifomity trial
will be within a subirrigated area. The water-table level
will be maintained at 22 inches, if possible.
Crop - Spring .rhea t (Saunders variety) will be drilled at the
rate of 75-80 Ib./A.
Fertilizer - Uniform applications of nitrogen (N) and phos-
phorus (P20S) fertilizers will be applied to the strips.
a. Forty Ib./A. of N and 40 Ib./A. of P20s will be applied
before planting.
b. An additional 40 Ib./A. of N will be broadcast when the
fine leaves have developed but previous to the boot stage.
Surface irrigation - The strips will be irrigated uniformly
to maintain optimum plant growth and development.

2.

3.

of water
applied in
to facilitate

5.

6.

7.

C. Yield Results:

Notations will be made of stand and growth differences in
the strips. Several sa'l1ples will be harvested ,.rithin each strip
to determine yield variability due to soil differences.

XI. Objectives:

To detemine the effects of tillage practices on infiltration
of irrigation .rater and the capillary rise of ground water in soils
containing a "plow sole" and a "pan layer".

- 8 -
